The paper explores the benefits of a public system and its inherent problems. The paper concludes with suggested improvements to the public education system in America.
From the Paper:
"In late 2004, the Dover Board of Education in Dover, Pennsylvania, just outside of York, voted 6-3 to alter their science curriculum to present alternate theories to biological evolution in their science classes. In addition, they required that all science teachers read a statement, written by the board, that informed students of only one alternate theory, Intelligent Design. Several science teachers resisted; parents became involved, the ACLU was called, and in 2005 the Kitzmiller et al. vs. Dover case went to trial. It was only after the national news began covering the story that the facts surrounding the school board's initial decision came to light; namely, that the Board was influenced by the Discovery Institute (a Christian Creationist organization) which provided legal advice in the form of offering council by the Thomas More Law Center. The Thomas More Law Center, a nonprofit legal organization, offers this statement under its "About Us" page on the company website: "Our purpose is to be the sword and shield for people of faith, providing legal representation without charge to defend and protect Christians and their religious beliefs in the public square." (www.thomasmore.org) The national debate that followed is merely a continuation of a centuries-old ongoing debate. Parents wish that the material taught in schools reflect their own personal and ethical views."
