Paper Summary:
This paper looks at how the 1651 publication "Leviathan", the masterpiece of English philosopher Thomas Hobbes, spelled out an empirical philosophy, a critique of human nature and a notion that regarded the State as a amalgam of all its citizens. It discusses how the "Leviathan" appeared at a juncture of severe crisis in the intellectual sphere, when scientific optimism had engendered bloated notions regarding human nature and its potential and philosophers were playing loose with God and materialism. Hobbes tempered this climate with a materialism that was devastatingly honest and did not entangle God. The paper further discusses how John Locke came along to turn the philosophy on its head and thereby authored the notion of unlimited political freedom.
From the Paper:
"Francis Bacon was the first to rally towards the cause of experimental science, but his plea was largely rhetoric and enthusiasm. He proposed to sweep away all traditional modes of enquiry and to replace it with the method of induction, which entails measurement and inference through reason. Not itself new, but the proposition was revolutionary in that the procedure was to be the only means of social conduct, with everything else in the vast treasury of human heritage was to be discarded at once as superstition. The prize, Bacon promised, was absolute knowledge and the eventual mastery over nature by man, and without a promise of such staggering proportions the sacrifice of tradition would never be entertained, despite it resonating exactly with the spirit of the age.
