"Times were tough for these newcomers by in 1924, many of the people were very glad to have jobs and to be in the United States. Because of this, the workers wanted to make a special thank you gesture to their new home and so they decided to use a little bit of their old roots and a little bit of their new home in America, too. These employees decided that Thanksgiving should be celebrated like festivals are celebrated in Europe and so on Thanksgiving Day in 1924 they all dressed up in costumes of bright colors, some which represented their heritage, and marched to the main Macy's store. Along with the employees there were parade floats, marching bands and the employees had even been allowed to use animals that came from the Central Park Zoo in the parade."
