"Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy in Anxious Children (CBT) was designed to teach children about how to recognize physiological and psychological indicators evident in emotional distress. The children are then taught to process this information and modify it in order to bring about changes in behavior and affect. The result of such therapy is that when experiencing catastrophic or fearful thoughts the child can then replace them with more realistic ones. This is extremely beneficial because such treatment teaches the child, along with the parents, how to change coping styles when anxiety or depression occurs. This is important because if unaddressed, symptoms of anxiety and/or depression will continue to negatively impact the child (Mendlowitz, Manassis, Bradley, Scapillato, Miezitis & Shaw, 1999)."
