When implementing change from a hierarchical system to a flat-based structure that promotes horizontal communication, this organization must embrace technology as a tool for disseminating information equally among all levels of the organization. A flat or democratic organization is more likely to utilize advances in technology to share knowledge and communicate consistently. The structure of the organization will include multiple teams that work together to realize organizational objectives and aims, and work together to overcome obstacles to productivity and success. Vasu, et al. note that a systems approach is best in this environment, where separate business units or entities are viewed as part of a collaborative whole, working together to promote organizational excellence rather than work separately to achieve independent aims."
