Paper Summary:

The paper begins by offering a summary of Tracy Kidder's "Home Town" and Susan Orlean's "My Kind of Place: Travel Stories from a Woman Who's Been Everywhere." The paper compares their works and explains how both authors, in their quest to present unseen aspects of their subjects, use an analytical perspective and the means of a literature writer. Therefore, the works they create stand at the boundary of reality, yet they do not represent fiction facts. The paper concludes that these authors-with all their differences- are considered original literary journalists. This is taking into consideration the purpose of their writings, the techniques used to convey their message and the fine delimitation between fiction and nonfiction on which they structure their works.

From the Paper:

""One of the things I wanted you to feel in this book, when you were with each of the characters, you'd really be with the person, engaged, wondering what would happen and why. Then I wanted to move you away and have you feel, oh, yes, this is important, there's something larger, a bigger vessel."(Kenner). One could very well consider the essence of literary journalism as being captured by Tracy Kidder's thoughts on one of his books, "Home Town". When depicting the 30, 000 people town of Northampton, Massachusetts, he in fact tries to point to a wider look, a broader reality, that of the typical long forgotten American town. In achieving it, he makes use not so much of factual and historic details which still play am important part in the book, but relies on his four main characters to build the atmosphere of the town through their own eyes. Being chosen to represent all sorts of people, they manage to ensure that Northampton unravels itself to the reader as "a place with a full set of parts." Kidder's strategy is to interweave the stories of four characters, while touching on several others."
