Paper Summary:
Beowulf is rife with examples of good kings and this theme is presented and enforced throughout the entire epic, making it a powerful motif. The most important kings dictate the action of the story and for the other characters, the kings' will is a matter, quite literally, of life and death. The paper shows that the anonymous poet extols the virtues of the ideal sovereign so often that it is impossible to ignore and even uses various digressions from the main plot to ensure this image is cemented in the reader's mind. The paper shows that this concentration on the role of the king involves many characters, both in scarcely mentioned roles and as major figures, but the focus of this theme and the axis around which it revolves is Beowulf himself.
From the Paper:
"Another important yet veiled nuance of kingship arises in the personage of Hrothgar when he refers to his subjects as his "band of kinsmen" (83). This implies that the king's men are not simply his thralls, but rather his companions, friends, and family. This sentiment is echoed by Beowulf when he calls his own band "Hygelac's / companions at the bench" (82), implying a more intimate and personal relationship than mere ruler/follower between his king, and his own group of warriors. The king is a first among equals, and this equality is expressed wonderfully by Hrothgar, when he addresses Beowulf as his "friend" (85). There is no condescension here from king to subject, and though Beowulf recognises that the king holds the superior position deserving of great respect, the king knows that he must in turn respect all of his men, including Beowulf, because he realizes that his rule and success depends so much on their trust, loyalty, and respect for him."
