This paper studies the Milton poem "Paradise Lost". The paper examines the enchanting verse of Satan, the elaboration of Adam's rhetoric at the occasion of his fall and Milton's fear of wandering words keeping him from his noble task. The paper begins by describing Satan's beguiling behavior and persona. The paper then addresses Milton's narrative intervention and asks whether it is simply a means of getting the material back under control or if it serves another purpose. The paper also questions whether Adam's abrupt change in discourse after his fall reflect the poem's -- and poet's -- attitude toward the narration of stories in general? The paper concludes that all of these elements reflect the epic poem's underlying theme of the dangerous, often perverse, powers of poetry.

"Feelings of ambition, pride, and revenge are common to all men, but the degree to which Satan suffers from these emotions prevents sympathy. Furthermore, despite his endless discussion of pride and honor, he continually seeks his ends through the most cowardly means. He flees the guardian Angels, sneaks into Eden and ultimately chooses the most base and beastly way to tempt Eve. Satan begins the poem prostrate on his stomach, and even after his greatest success he remains trapped in this humiliating position - ultimately, it is just too revolting to crawl around with the Devil. Though he continues to whine and scheme in sophisticated speech, his craft fails to hide his ugliness. Toward the end of the poem, as Satan reiterates "Save what is in destroying, other joy to me is lost," any previous pleasure found in his company has been irretrievably lost."
