This paper is a personal analysis of the speech of Callicles in Plato's "The Gorgias". Callicles argues against philosophic discussions for they are taken too seriously. Callicles states that it is good for young men to indulge in some limited philosophic discussions, but as men get older, they should abandon philosophy and practice "getting along in society as it is." The author of this paper analyzes that quote in particular, concluding while Callicles is correct that philosophy only has limited usefulness, he is wrong when he claims it is only useful for the education of young men and then should be abandoned. Men never stop learning and growing, says the author, no matter what their age.

"In the first paragraph, Callicles discusses the difference between looking for what is fine and noble in the shortcomings everyday life in nature and arbitrary custom. Callicles says philosophers look at everyday life through arbitrary custom. Arbitrary custom and nature are antagonistic. In nature, the strong rule, but in the arbitrary customs of man, this is not true. Philosophers argue that men are equal, and that the inequalities in man can be overcome through laws. However, in man's natural state before written laws, the strongest and the smartest ruled over the weakest and the ignorant. Nature grants men certain physical difference, and arbitrary custom ignores those differences."
