An analysis of the symbolism seen in F. Scott Fitzgerald's famous novel, "The Great Gatsby".

Written in 2006; 953 words; 3 sources; MLA; $ 33.95

Paper Summary:

Using examples from the book, this paper demonstrates how F. Scott Fitzgerald used symbolism in his novel, "The Great Gatsby", to depict the materialistic mentality and shallow moral values of the Jazz Age.

From the Paper:

"That Gatsby does not live up to his potential is the tragedy of the character and of the society the author is writing about. The result of such materialism is a morally bereft, careless society that destroys itself by destroying each other. This is summed up at the end of the book after Tom Buchanan admits to Nick that he was responsible for Gatsby's death, which resulted from the ultimate symbol of carelessness, the automobile accident. Nick sees that in Tom's mind it was all justified. "It was all very careless and confused. They were careless people, Tom and Daisy - they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness..." (189.28 - 32) This conclusion recalls the careless behavior of the people at Gatsby's party."
