In Gulliver's Travels, the protagonist is a good natured, hard-working, curious man, but a most ordinary one. This paper examines how, as the character develops by Book IV, we watch Gulliver as he is slowly driven mad by his realization that he can never hope to achieve the state of existence of the supremely rational, noble Houyhnhnms. It also considers whether this is also the kind of society that Swift is advocating as a utopia.

"Gulliver discovers that between him and the hated Yahoos is a similarity and he slowly begins to retreat from the human race. The same pride that he scorns makes him a victim as he fails to recognize his own limitations. The Houyhnhnms described are creatures of absolute rationality who happen to inhabit the bodies of horses. Gulliver is startled by the freedom they have from passion, envy, hatred and greed. He cannot comprehend how the Houyhnhnms can be so rational and not have the depth of feeling humans boast of. In his being dazzled by the Houyhnhnms he begins to idolize them and forgets that the human race cannot be as rational as they are."
