This paper discusses how throughout the story of Winston Smith, a simple man with aspirations to live a better life, George Orwell shows many of the moral inconsistencies of the totalitarian and authoritarian regimes in the world. It looks at how the ruling class used a number of manipulative devices such as the rewriting of history, the use of political icons, the use of extensive and oppressive propaganda, the exploitation of technology and the use of contradictory thinking, to control Winston and those around him, as did other ruling parties throughout history.

"This is the novel's final example of the paradoxical thinking that has been consistent throughout. Wilson now shows not only affection, but also love for something has he has hated all of his life, and he does so without any logical reasoning. This type of false logic, accordingly named "doublethink" by the author, allows a person to contain two contradictory ideas in their mind and then simply dismiss whichever one goes against the Party's belief as a false fact. Examples of this brainwashing technique are obvious throughout the story. The names of the departments within the party are all contradictory - the "Ministry of Truth" actually falsifies historical documents, the "Ministry of Peace" actually handles war, the "Ministry of Love" is actually filled with terror and torture, and the "Ministry of Plenty" is actually responsible for the economic affairs of a society living in poverty. Also, the Party's three-part slogan - "War is Peace", "Freedom is Slavery", and "Ignorance is Strength" - is a series of contradictions. Once this type of control over the thoughts and beliefs of the Party members has been established, the ruling class is completely invincible. These techniques were employed successfully by the Nazis to brainwash millions into believing their altered sense of reality was accurate."
