This paper examines various methods for creating community classrooms. The paper presents a comprehensive literature review of differing opinions on how to build a community within the classroom. The paper contends that community classrooms should be active, progressive, individualized, friendly, informal, personal and fun. The paper also suggests creating an open atmosphere for collaborative learning, setting up class rites and rituals and developing a time for group sharing on a personal level.

"The collaborative learning community also focuses on learning. This learning must be demonstrated by more than than passing a written test. Knowledge is based on conceptual understanding and the ability to apply knowledge. The CLC model expects students to be responsible for their learning. Learning content is geared toward the students' Collaboration within a school is an idea whose time has come. The entire staff of a school needs to set goals and traditions and work toward meeting them. Teachers who find that a school does not have the same educational beliefs that they hold need to find a school that they may be a partner in. The hardest thing for a school is a staff divided. Administrators and staff must toil together for collaboration to occur. The CLC model encourages this type of work environment. The authors appear to support the Summerhill method of education wherein the curriculum is governed by the child's interest."
