Paper Summary:
The writer of this paper shows that Marxist and materialist analysts consider literature closely connected to social authority and influence. This paper endeavours to provide a guide as to how to actualize these approaches when studying the novel. The characters are also analyzed from this perspective - dictators vs. the lower social standing.
From the Paper:
"The Marxist perspective is fashioned on the political and economic ideas of the German philosopher Karl Marx. He formulated a theory in which social conditions are defined by one?s political and economic state. (Spurgin, 1997). The model is based on labor, the economic rationale of all societal decisions, attitudes and foundations. Fundamentally, class struggle drives history resulting in the working class eventually attaining power through revolutionary means. The model also describes how the ?dictators? of society (upper class) employ their power and privilege to keep the working class down. However, the model predicts that their attempts to maintain the status quo will be futile as human development progresses towards a classless society. http://www.angelfire.com/tx4/marxistviews/) ?Sense and Sensibility? is a virtual playground for Marx?s theories to obtain credence ? the whole story is about class struggle, how the haves endeavour to maintain the status quo and how the have-nots attempt to transcend their place in society to achieve happiness."
