The author points out that research has shown that school systems with limited resources, such as rural schools with small enrollments and large urban schools especially with underprivileged populations, benefit from the use of distance learning. The paper relates that a distance-based curriculum associated with a student-driven online platform would be more appropriate for an older set of the K-12 population while prerecorded classroom instruction could be used within all age groups with a clear caveat but an appropriate educator must be available. "One of the most difficult issues associated with distance learning is the ability to judge its effectiveness in any environment, including but not limited to the K-12 set. There is little data associated with the phenomenon that statistically evaluates the efficacy of distance learning, no before and after studies that demonstrate proof of distance success. Yet, it can be clearly stated that students offered coursework that would otherwise be completely outside of their scope perform much more effectively on tests in their course work than they would have without the distance opportunity, yet is this really saying a lot when we are discussing a course topic such as Mandarin Chinese Language learning?"
