Through an examination of this book, the paper looks at how Verghese treated patients with AIDS before the medical community knew that the HIV virus precipitated the deadly disease. It focuses on the case of Gordon Vine, Verghese?s first real AIDS patient. It tells of the problems Verghese experienced getting the recognition of the medical community and of his personal hardships in facing the disease.

"The AIDS epidemic also alerted Verghese of the shortcomings of modern medicine. A deadly disease without a cure, AIDS is one of the banes of the medical community. The lack of understanding of the disease adds to the psychological problems of treating people with AIDS. Verghese was forced to help patients who he knew would die soon, only so that they could make peace with themselves and become as comfortable as possible under the circumstances. He undoubtedly grew as a doctor and as a person through his experiences working with AIDS patients and witnessing the sad effects of the disease. Verghese places AIDS within a broader social and even political context as he describes how the epidemic affected a small Applachian town as opposed to a large urban center. The demographic anomaly of Johnson City also taught Verghese and his readers that diseases transcend gender, sexual orientation, race, and class."
