Paper Summary:
This paper explains that, in 399 B.C.E., the philosophical tenets of Socrates were put to the ultimate test when he was placed on trial for his beliefs that, at times, conflicted with those usually supported by the majority of Athenians. It argues that, although Socrates, unlike the Sophists, offered no courses and took no fees, his effect on the people of ancient Athens was as upsetting as the relativistic doctrines of the Sophists had been.
From the Paper:
"Indeed, Socrates' refutation of his fellow conversationalists' most treasured beliefs made some of his interlocutors decidedly uncomfortable. Unhappiest of all were the fathers whose sons, after listening to Socrates reduce someone to utter bewilderment, came home to try the same technique on their parents. Men who experienced this reversal of the traditional hierarchy of education between parent and child, being that the son was supposed to be educated by the father, believed that it might undermine the stability of society by questioning Athenian traditions and inspiring young men to do the same with the passionate enthusiasm of their youth.
In his Apology, Plato continues to show the hostilities that some Athenians felt towards Socrates by mentioning that a number of prominent Athenians joined forces in prosecuting Socrates in 399 B.C.E. Since the laws of amnesty, related to the period of tyranny in 404--403, prevented these men from bringing any charges, they roundly accused him of impiety. As Athenian law did not specify exactly what offenses constituted impiety, the accusers had to convince the jurors chosen for the case that "what Socrates had done and how he had behaved and what he believed constituted a serious crime against moral decency" (Miller, 58)."
