"Northampton County Virginia, in the 1650?s, provided an abundance of space for growth and partial equalization for any race. Anthony Johnson, for example, was an African in Northampton who not only owned a sizable estate but had a large family and owned slaves. What made his success, as a planter and patriarch possible were the societal characteristics of 17th century Virginia and its inhabitants as well as Johnson?s strong personal ambition and family support. This society had a hierarchy based on economics rather than race, and a court system that found justice with little regard to skin color. Johnson?s family provided emotional and financial support, and fueled his ambition through their need for his support as well."
