"This study will analyze the speech of Henry W. Grady as delivered to the New England Society of New York City on December 21, 1886. The study's significance is twofold. First, the speech, "The New South," is a remarkable example of rhetorical success in which the speaker fits the speech effectively and dramatically to the situation and the audience. Second, the speech tells us more than one hundred years later much about the political, social and economic atmosphere of the country such as it existed after the Civil War and after doubts had set in with respect to the relevance or desirability of Reconstruction in the Southern States.

The thesis of the study will, therefore, be to demonstrate the reasons for the effectiveness of Grady's speech. The thesis is important for the light it will shed on both the development ... "
