Migraines, 2002.
An overview of the symptoms and causes of migraines.
1,818 words (approx. 7.3 pages), 9 sources, MLA, AU$ 84.95

Abstract
A migraine is a chronic paroxysmal disorder which differs from a normal headache by its symptoms and degree of pain. After defining migraines, the paper examines the causes of this disorder, including food, environmental and body reactions. The paper then looks at the different kinds of migraines (classic, common, transformed, chronic) and concludes with forms of treatment used by sufferers.

From the Paper
"Migraines and headaches have different causes. The pain associated with a headache is caused by vasoconstriction, the medical term for the narrowing of blood vessels in the brain. A migraine?s cause, however, is just the opposite. During a migraine, the blood vessels in the brain expand, in a process called vasodilation. This causes a swelling of the tissues around the brain, which makes the pain worse. When migraine suffers take headache medicine geared treat vasoconstriction, they inadvertently dilate the blood vessels further. This in turn causing increased swelling, thereby making the migraine worse (Coleman and Burchfield)."

Migraines, 2004.
This paper discusses migraines and their relationship to stress.
1,635 words (approx. 6.5 pages), 4 sources, MLA, AU$ 77.95

Abstract
This paper explains that many studies indicate stress can be a major factor in causing at least some forms of migraines, and treating the stress in a patient's life can often lead to a reduction in migraine pain and recurrence. The author points out that studies suggest that many migraine sufferers have poor coping mechanisms for both stress and their condition; therefore, stress affects them more strongly. The paper relates that many physicians treat their patients not only with medication for the pain, but also to help them reduce stress from their daily lives to reduce the occurrence of these debilitating headaches.

From the Paper
"Migraine headaches are quite painful for their sufferers and often difficult to control or eliminate. Patients report feeling a severe throbbing or aching, normally in one side of the head, which often does not respond to normal painkillers. There can be sensitivity to light or noise, nausea, vomiting, and intense pain in the area of the headache. Often, a migraine attack is predicted by an aura of light the patient sees before the pain begins. More women suffer migraines than men, and they tend to hit the 35- to 45-year old age group the hardest. It is believed migraines are caused by a restriction of the blood vessels in the area of the brain where the pain is centered, and in the 1990s, the drug Imitrex came on the market to specifically treat these restricted blood vessels."

Abstract
An estimated 24 to 28 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches, which is the most common neurological disorder in the modern world and modern times. This affliction reduces work performance by 50% and accrues to wasted resources and a generally low-quality of life. The more common type of migraine afflicts 80% of all sufferers, who mostly do not consult with physicians. The paper shows that, at present, migraine attacks are managed with pain-killers, herbal medications, and alternative therapies. But research continues to discover more effective, safer and readily available modes to control migraines.

Paper Outline:
Abstract
Introduction
Materials and Methods
Results
Discussion
Conclusion
Bibliography

From the Paper
"The holistic and practical way of preventing migraine attacks consists of recognizing and avoiding triggers and taking prescription or appropriate drugs when the attacks begin (Robinson 1999). Certain habits must be established to avoid these attacks. These may be eating at regular times, reducing coffee intakes, keeping regular sleeping hours without oversleeping, restricting physical exertion and time management that will avoid or lessen stress at work or at home. Drugs that can help prevent migraine attacks are beta blockers, tricyclic anti-depressants, cancium channel blockers, anticonvulsants, prozac, monoamine ocidase inhibitors and serotonin antagonists (Robinson)."

Conclusions

From the Paper
"Cocoa takes it a step further though. Not only does it provide energy for our actions. It supplies chemicals for our personalities and moods. Modern psychology leads us to believe that every thought, every idea that pops into our head is simultaneously a biological reaction. This biological reaction takes the form of chemical processes within our brains. Our mind then interprets these chemical compounds as thoughts, ideas, smells, tastes, touch, etc. Our thoughts, or chemicals compounds within our brain can determine how we feel, our motivation, our goals, our entire lives hinge upon our thoughts, for what are we but what we do. And before we do anything, we must think it. We must have considered it at some point or been subconsciously predisposed to an action or idea."
