A literate citizenry is wider read, understands more complex issues, and is better capable of functioning in society. In short, a literate population is a stronger What makes literacy so important to modern life? Laymen often challenge this conception, arguing that once they graduated from school they never picked up another book. However, this picture of reading doesn't take into account the sometimes-central role that literacy can play in the workplace. The United Way estimates that illiteracy costs U.S. businesses and taxpayers roughly $20 billion a year. Additionally, $5 billion a year is spent in the U.S. supporting individuals who are unemployed because of illiteracy (Korkki 7)."

Even the loss of home and shelter, in this case, is not so terrifying as the loss of self." From the Paper "An art-historical comparison of Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol, two of the most celebrated artists of the mid to late twentieth century, is significant in demonstrating a shift from modernism to postmodernism. Pollock is represented as an ultimate expression of modernism and the embodiment of ambition for liberation in the 1950's. His drip paintings, which eliminated subject matter as essential , paved the way for modernist artists to take apart the foundations of all that was special in previous art making and abandon beauty as an ideal. Because of the significance of his work, modernism couldn't have gone as far without Pollock. The era of modernism, however, came to an end in 1964 according to Arthur Danto who stated that Warhol's art, especially his Brillo Boxes, marked its end. At the same time, as this work also implies the beginning of postmodernism, which is derived from modernist beliefs and attitudes, it is the art world with diverse aesthetic forms that broke with modernism. As a postmodernist and the enigmatic homosexual superstar of Pop Art, Warhol, adopted media, popular culture, and reproduction to rebel against the characteristics of modernism which Pollock's work and attitude toward art represented. By looking at two particular paintings, Pollock's Lucifer (1947) and Warhol's Triple Elvis (1961), we are able to bring out not only the differentiation of their personas and attitudes toward their art, but also the issues of Warhol's rebellion against modernist including Pollock."

Abstract This paper studies the Bronze Age which was one of the great eras of our European past. It describes the widespread adoption of bronze metallurgy across Europe at the time, as well as the many technological advances. It examines the levels of literacy as well as the society and the writings of the Bronze Age scribes. It also discusses "The Linear B Decipherment" and how Evans continued to study it after the Balkan War. Finally, the paper concludes that the effects of writing and literacy on society were great and significant.

In doing this they recognize that the properties of the main metal used by a society?s technology greatly affect both its use and through this the nature of that society. For instance, bronze unlike iron is too soft to be used for ploughing; it is an alloy. Bronze can be smelted at lower temperatures than iron which need specialized supplies of charcoal. All these facts affect societies which use bronze and iron. For example, since bronze cannot be used for ploughing these societies cannot produce in many regions the large agriculture surplus iron societies can; since bronze requires tin bronze age societies had to trade, etc. (Claiborne, 1974) I believe the same parallel exists between the different characteristics of different writing systems and its use as a communication technology in a society."

Abstract This paper evaluates computer/technological literacy, the term given to frequent use of modern technologies, especially computers. It examines how with the growing use of computers in the workplace, classroom and home in addition to the Internet coming into common use as a marketplace, bank, library and communications tool, technological/computer literacy has become unavoidable. It discusses how computer literacy affects the notion of literacy itself and if they can be considered one and the same. Literacy at a basic level is considered the ability to read and therefore technology only provides a different medium with which to do so. It concludes that computer literacy is not is not an independent entity, but an extension and an expansion of literacy itself. Questions of the necessity of technological literacy are raised and discussed, and the relationship between "standard" literacy and computer or technological literacy is also analyzed.

Abstract The paper discusses how, although literacy is not literally a function of slavery as it was when Douglass wrote his narrative, literacy remains a tool of social and political empowerment. The paper explores how individuals with inadequate literacy skills cannot begin to compete in a job market based on information; to run for political office; to read articles or websites. The paper further discusses how literacy bestows on the individual a means of communicating with others, of sharing ideas and debating essential points in the hopes of changing minds and hearts. The paper concludes that, through mastery of the written word, poor and oppressed individuals can challenge the assumptions that guide the dominant culture and create transformation and change just as Douglass did over a century ago.

We all wish to make our classes as interesting and relevant to our students as we possibly can. This definition of authentic writing and reading gives us a way to do this. Most all of us can recall how boring it seemed to mindlessly do worksheets or endless lists of practice exercises. By adding a "real" audience and a "real" purpose can make a writing assignment more meaningful or fun. Whether in graduate school or second grade, most of us would rather understand "why" we have to do an activity." Authentic literacy activities, as defined in this article, help students to understand that "why. Children can see how the skills they are learning are used by adults. In an age where students are subject to a great deal of test-preparation activities, doing something "real" might also be a welcomed break for teachers and students.
