This paper explains that the first European explorer to reach India was Vasco da Gama of Portugal, who arrived in what is today Calcutta in 1498, giving the Portuguese control over Goa and other areas on the western coast of India. The author points out the writing of Ralph Fitch, who, in 1588, traveled to the Malay Peninsula and visited Malacca, now in Malaysia, where he learned much about trade with China and the Spice Islands, now the Moluccas. "By the 1350s, the whole imperial colossus of India was beginning to unravel. In 1398, it received a death blow from an invasion by Tamerlane, the great conqueror of central Asia. Tamerlane's incursion was brief, but it shattered India's central authority, laying waste to Punjab and leaving the Delhi Sultanate clinging to a small area around its pillaged capital. In time, the sultanate recovered some of its earlier power, but it never again approached all-Indian dominion. However, its rule had a lasting impact by bringing about an intermingling of Muslim and Hindu peoples and ideas, mostly because of the policy of religious tolerance that circumstances required. It also brought about the use of Persian as the official language in place of the ancient Sanskrit."

"According to Weatherford, the early post-Columbian contact of the Europeans with the native populace actually enabled the Industrial Revolution to change Europe, and ultimately the world. "Had Europe and America not come together through Columbus or some other connection, the industrial revolution would never have happened in the way we know it," because Europeans would never have gained access to the metals of the New World, or to Indian mines (Weatherford 57). This contact also generated the money economy of Europe and fueled a shift to a European economy based upon real, hard, convertible currency. This paper explains that the "Friends of the American Indians" believed that education was the only answer to the "Indian problem" to assimilate Native Americans into Euro-American society. For the most part the new white settlers found the Indians to be friendly and willing to trade with them and allow them to share their lands. This friendship would not continue, however, as the white populations grew and exploited the Indian. Much of North America was rich in natural resources which the white men wanted. They also wanted the lands that would provide homes and farms for the constant flow of immigrants that were to arrive.
For the most part the United States government and wealthy easterners were responsible for the Indians losing their land."
