Abstract
Alan Kraut's book, "Goldberger's War: The Life and Work of a Public Health Crusader" studies the outbreak of pellagra in 1907 and the efforts made by Dr. Joseph Goldberger to offer correct etiology and cure for the same. This paper examines the effects of the epidemic which killed over 100,000 people and the hurdles and North-versus-South politics which affected Dr. Goldberger's attempt to bring an end to this disease.

From the Paper
"It is indeed tragic to learn that Goldberger's research was so badly affected by political issues that South continued to suffer from pellagra for many years even after the diet-based cure had been discovered. The South was simply unwilling to accept that its people were living in sub human conditions and even refused to accept Red Cross aid. The South had yet not forgotten the "lost cause" of the Civil war and did not want to accept the charge of poverty and that too from a Northerner. When efforts of Goldberger resulted in a move for Red Cross aid to be directed to Southern regions, one Southern Congressman termed all reports of hunger and poverty "utter absurdity" [1]. People were so riled against reports of famine that residents of Georgia cried, "When this part of Georgia suffers from famine, the rest of the world will be dead!" [1] The United Daughters of the Confederacy also participated in the protests showing concern over 'false' reports."

Actor Whoopi Goldberg, 2005.
This paper is a contextualization of the life and contributions of actor Whoopi Goldberg.

Abstract
This paper explains that Whoopi Goldberg (real name, Caryn Elaine Johnson) grew up in a New York housing project, became a single, teenage mother and dropped out of high school because she was convinced that she was not able to understand basic lessons. (Later she found out that she had dyslexia.) The author points out that, in 1983, Goldberg's career took off when director Mike Nichols attended her show at the New York's Dance Theater Workshop and immediately signed her for a one-woman Broadway show; Steven Spielberg chose her to play the lead in "The Color Purple" for which she received an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe Award. The paper concludes that Goldberg represents a true pioneer in the motion picture industry not only because of her groundbreaking roles, which place her at the forefront of the black female actors in America today, but also because Goldberg's portrayal of white actors created an environment that breaks down social barriers while tacitly acknowledging and reinforcing others.

From the Paper
"Goldberg endured the unendurable for several months ("I had this caseworker who was nasty as hell"), which makes her reaction to her initial success more understandable. Even though she's won a Grammy, a Golden Globe Award and received an Emmy nomination, Goldberg reports that absolutely nothing in her life has come close to the sense of accomplishment that she felt when, after five years on public assistance, she was able to support herself through acting: "The greatest thing I ever was able to do was give a welfare check back. I brought it back to the welfare department and said, 'Here. I don't need this anymore.""

Anti-Psychology Theory, 2007.
A discussion of the problems with the discipline of psychology, according to Carl Goldberg.
732 words (approx. 2.9 pages), 4 sources, MLA, AU$ 38.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper presents some allegations of Carl Goldberg, some of which contradict one another, that according to him, are the reasons that psychology is in a crisis. The paper discusses Goldberg's allegations and then describes the flaws in his reasoning. The paper also touches on the ways that the disciplines of various schools of psychology are continually evolving.

From the Paper
"Ideally, psychology uses both tools of rehabilitation to treat the human mind and body. For example, increasingly, neither pills nor therapy alone seems to provide a full solution for many mental problems. Take manic depression, which was once thought to demand a fairly straightforward prescription for lithium, or a new variation of the drug. Now, therapists find "drugs are not effective enough ...psychotherapy can help patients learn new coping styles and interpersonal habits," to contain their symptoms in combination with drug treatment (Marano, 2002). This relates Goldberg's rather sweeping claim to a specific instance. The treatment of both the human mind and brain chemistry of someone suffering from mania is required for effective alleviation of suffering and to make the person a productive member of society once again."

Abstract
The paper examines the Goldberg, Silverman, Weinstein, Kantor and Company Chartered Accountants and their weaknesses in the areas of management and human resources (HR). The paper discusses the need to transform their group into a team with a leader who is not only well-liked but also achieves management goals. The paper relates that the working conditions for general employees is not good enough and addresses several HR and management issues. The paper looks at the need for performance-based policies, an improvement in conflict management, a focus on diversity and the implementation of training and development programs and succession planning.

Outline:
Analysis: Team or Group
Satisfaction & Dissatisfaction
HR Issues: Performance-based Policies
Conflict Management
Diversity
Training & Succession Planning

From the Paper
"A Cross-Functional Team is formed when people with varied levels of skills, experience, backgrounds or departments are brought together for to accomplish a task as in the case of Stan's team. An important consideration here is the understanding of the difference between the team and the group. All teams are groups but not all groups are teams. A group is the mere assembly of people brought together while team members come together for a common cause and mission. The key difference between a team and a group is performance and not play or camaraderie. It is good that Stan plays around with his team and they all get along well with each other but the main purpose that is performance seems to be missing from the Stan's team."

?The Birthday Party? by Harold Pinter, 2002.
An analysis of a scene in the play involving a conversation between three characters: Nat Goldberg, Seamus Mccann and Stanley Webber.
2,175 words (approx. 8.7 pages), 1 source, MLA, AU$ 97.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
The paper gives an overview of the play by describing the setting and the characters in the play. It then describes and analyzes the conversation that takes place where Goldberg and Mccann interrogate Webber.

From the Paper
"As was mentioned before, the conversation is an example of foregrounding. Pinter designs it such that the audience knows what is transpiring as (or even before) it takes place. The lack of conversational niceties helps create that mood, as do the several neutral tokens, self and other oriented tokens. The construction of the conversation is to fire queries at Webber so as to break him down. One might imagine the skill it took actors to bring Pinter?s imagination to fruition. The accusations, the physical aspersions, the absurdities and the tokens are cleverly interspersed to give this inquisition an unrelenting quality."

The Due Process Law, 2007.
An examination of the due process law that requires a thorough evidentiary hearing before a person can be deprived of benefits.
978 words (approx. 3.9 pages), 1 source, MLA, AU$ 50.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
The paper explains that the due process law, as stated in the 14th and 5th Amendments, requires a thorough evidentiary hearing before a person can be deprived of benefits. The paper describes the due process law as ensuring that when the government, whether federal or state, decides to terminates a person's entitlements, he/she will be given an opportunity to use his/her legal rights in the most suitable manner to defend his/her position. The paper examines evidentiary hearing and what the court's opinion has been on the deprivation of benefits. The paper also looks at the landmark Goldberg vs. Kelly case.

From the Paper
"While the Fourteenth Amendment expressively mentions states, the Fifth Amendment deals with due process law in federal context. Now that we know that a person cannot be deprived of benefits without due process of law, it is also important to mention here that an essential component of due process is evidentiary hearing. This was decided by the Court in the landmark case Goldberg v Kelly (1970). This allowed evidentiary hearing to become an important part of the rights granted to a citizen under due process law. The two important questions that are answered in evidentiary hearing are concerned with jurisdiction and presence of probable cause. Jurisdiction question can be settled easily while probable cause requires further explanation."

Women in Ground Combat, 2004.
This paper discusses the constitutionality of women in ground combat.
2,070 words (approx. 8.3 pages), 3 sources, MLA, AU$ 94.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper explains that the legal standard applied by the courts in deciding whether the Army?s combat exclusion violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution is the Intermediate Scrutiny Standard, which the Supreme Court used in "Craig v. Boren" as the test for deciding discrimination based on gender. The author believes that the Army should repeal its combat exclusion rule and allow qualified women, who have gone through extensive ground combat training and have passed the physical and mental tests, to join direct ground combat troops. The paper relates that, although there are many cases supporting women?s equality in the Army, "Rostker v. Goldberg" supports the Army in exercising its rights under Congress, which may be seen as its only legal argument.

From the Paper
"'Women In The Armed Forces", a study which was conducted to get a better understanding of the impact of employing women in the most demanding close combat roles, found that ?differences between women and men in their capacity to develop muscle strength and aerobic fitness are such that only approximately one percent of women can equal the performance of the average man?[1]. The study also reported that in that finding, lifting and such tasks as carrying on average women would have to work fifty to eighty percent harder to achieve the same results, and that this puts them at greater risk [1]. In load marching, which are another fundamental task, and other simulated combat tasks, women were found to perform worse than men and the greater the load, the greater the discrepancy. The physiological aspect of the study concluded that, ?about 0.1% of female applicants and 1% of trained female soldiers would reach the required standards to meet the demands of these roles?[1]."

Overthrow of Salvador Allende, 2002.
Examines the overthrow of Chilean President Salvador Allende in 1973 and the consequences.
1,242 words (approx. 5.0 pages), 2 sources, MLA, AU$ 61.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
The death and violent overthrow of Chilean President Dr. Salvador Allende, on September 11, 1973, represents the result of a three-year long testing whether political institutions can survive sharp transformation in their policies. The capitalist class, with help from exterior powers, replaced Allende?s democratically elected government with a military regime that ruled for 17 years. The crucial figure in this military coup was Allende?s successor Augusto Pinochet. This paper examines the events that led to the overthrow of Dr. Allende?s government, as well as the significance of the overthrow. The opinions from scholars Peter A. Goldberg, author of the journal ?The Politics of the Allende Overthrow in Chile? as well as Gil Merom, author of the journal ?Democracy, Dependency, and Destabilization: The Shaking of Allende?s Regime? are used as reference.

From the Paper
"Forty years prior to Allende?s rise to power, the Chilean political elite was dependent on bargaining and compromises between government and opposition parties. However, during his regime, Allende made an agreement between his Unidad Popular (UP) the coalition of parties of the left, and Christian Democratic Party (PDC). The agreement provided new constitutional backing for the pluralism of Chile?s institutional system, in return for which the PDC agreed to vote for Allende. The agreement guaranteed the existence of the opposition political parties, while the President is in control of armed forces. Social groups like labor unions and institutions like the universities, the private schools and the communication media were guaranteed their autonomy and multiparty character. This marriage between UP and PDC worked almost perfectly during the first year of Allende?s regime."

Equal Rights, Equal Obligations, Equal Opportunities, 2000.
This essay discusses women in the military and the law.
1,425 words (approx. 5.7 pages), 1 source, AU$ 68.95
» Click here to show/hide summary

Abstract
This paper discusses the legal basis of the situation of women in the military, and relevant court cases such as Hoyt v. Florida, Taylor v. Louisiana, US vs. St. Clair, Rostker v. Goldberg, Craig v. Boren, and Schlesinger vs. Ballard. Discusses myths and truths regarding women and military service. Argues for equal rights, equal obligations, and equal opportunities within military and civilian spheres.

From the paper:

"Men and women are treated unequally in regards to military service. Men are required to register for the Selective Service when they turn 18, while women are exempt. While women are allowed to perform most jobs in the military, they are still restricted from some combat roles. This gender inequality stems from antiquated notions of female weakness and domesticity, which have no legal validity in our society today. Furthermore, limiting women?s roles in the military violates women?s rights to be full and equal citizens of the United States, with all the privileges, obligations, and duties that carries with it."
