Abstract The book "Not Your Father's Union Movement", edited by Jo-Ann Mort, is comprised of eighteen articles covering many of the central issues in the changing world of union activism. The paper shows that the main argument of the book is that the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) has undergone complete reorganization to meet the needs of working families in a changing economy and also to rebuild the critical link in fighting for worker's rights in a progressive and egalitarian America.
From the Paper "The emphasis of the Bensinger article and many of the others in this book is on the argument that effective organization is the key to the re-emergence of the union as a powerful social, economic, and political force in society on behalf of those whom the corporations would exploit, if not intimidate and discourage into silence. Organization is the key to union success because it mobilizes workers and brings them together in a cooperative atmosphere which results in effective action (such as the HERE "sip-in" and marches), which, in turn, solidifies members' determination to fight for better pay and working conditions. In addition, success breeds more success, which convinces workers to see the fight through to little victory upon little victory at the local level, and this leads to bigger victories at the national level."

Abstract This paper reviews and summarizes studies that looked at whether unionized companies were less or more profitable than non-union firms and whether there was less new investment in unionized firms as compared to non-unionized ones. After reviewing the literature, the paper concludes that, while unions generally transfer payment from shareholders to employees, there is a downside to unionization; it may inhibit the very investment needed to run the company.
From the Paper "As long ago as 1994, researchers were interested in ascertaining whether unionized companies were less or more profitable than nonunion firms, and whether there was less new investment in unionized firms as compared to nonunionized ones. Morgan investigated shareholder risk and rates of return in both sorts of companies during the period 1973-1987. Morgan?s work cited earlier work of Becker and Olson (1989) in which they provided an analysis of differences in shareholder risk and returns in union and nonunion companies, finding that shareholders in more highly unionized companies realized lower rates of return than did shareholders in the nonunion companies. Becker and Olson had further suggested that lower shareholder returns during the 1970s had led management to attempt to limit the extent of unionization during the 1980s in a move to reverse that trend. From the Paper "Historically, children's literature has always had a place in our lives. No matter how old we grow, we can relate many of our adult observations to the tales of our childhood. Having been fortunate to grow up in a family from two different cultures, I heard tales from old Europe from my Mother, and the rich tales of the southeastern United States from my Father. In considering Jung's theory of the archetype, there are three tales that come to mind. First, the movie "Song of The South", which tells stories of the South that my grandfather grew up in. Second, the tale of Max and Moritz, a cautionary tale for children told throughout Europe for hundreds of years. Finally, the classic "Cinderella" which, thanks to Disney, has become a favorite of all children born in the US in the last fifty years. These three tales all demonstrate the father archetype that Jung describes in "The Personal and the Collective Unconscious." These tales are classic examples of stories that appear in a variety of cultures, and all share a common thread- the absent father. Jung would have told us that the unconscious desire for someone to fill the archetypal role of father is at the root of all these tales. The absence of father theme in these three stories will show the human need for the archetypical father figure as nurturer, disciplinarian, and as lover."

National increases in divorce and non-marital childbearing in the United States have changed the face of the typical American family. This alteration in the nuclear family ushered in a new family model, the single parent or guardian (as they are sometimes termed). Dragging custody disputes out over long periods of time only serves to cause emotional harm to everyone involved, especially to the child whose future hangs in limbo while the case slowly moves through the courts. By implementing a uniform system of deciding these cases, forum shopping will be avoided. Consequently, multiple courts will no longer be asked to hear the same case, as happened in the Baby Jessica case. This will surely lead to faster adjudication and resolution of these disputes and, consequently, to less psychological trauma to the children caught in the middle."

From the Paper "The renewed scientific interest in the early seventies explored the stereotypical perception of fathers who were regarded as harsh disciplinarians and could not interact intimately with their infants (Rosenblith, 1992, p. 484). A study conducted on Australian fathers revealed that only 34 percent of the fathers believed that they could take care of their children (in Rosenblith, 1992, p. 484). However, another study revealed the complexity of some fathers? feelings toward these stereotypical notions. In the study, although most of the fathers? conceptions of their roles cohered with the stereotype, they also believed that fathers should be emotionally responsive and play with their infants (Rosenblith, 1992, p. 484). Therefore, even though they shared some stereotypical beliefs, they also possessed ideas that veer radically away from stereotype."

Abstract In the early days, the union was considered a moral establishment, ensuring that workers worked in safe and equitable environments. In today's society however, where capitalist endeavors dominate, wages and working conditions are already reasonable for the most part, thus unions are flailing.
