This paper explains that the invention of the steam engine, which led to the steamboat and the steam locomotive, began mankind's technological leap forward that continues today. The author points out that, secondary to the invention of the steamboat was the locomotive steam engine, which allowed direct transportation from cities on the Atlantic Ocean to cities on the Pacific Ocean without having to traverse the Cape of Good Hope in the extreme southern hemisphere, making it more affordable to ship goods and farm products. The paper relates that public transportation was not available in the United States until after the Civil War; its availability was responsible for the creation of the suburbs.

The United States was rich in rivers, most especially the Mississippi Rivers that connected the Great Lakes (eventually connected by the Hudson River through the Erie Canal from Chicago to Louisiana. The Louisiana Purchase would have been a poor bargain if it did not include access through the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Until the steamboat became practical, large river barges were poled by hand and smaller boats such were paddled. Both methods were highly labor intensive and slow. Sailboats were not practical outside of the oceans and Great Lakes. Even then, the vessels were dependent on prevailing winds (or lack thereof)."

The following paper argues that there were two developments that were most important in constituting a transportation revolution: Steamboat navigation and the construction of the great canals. This paper focuses on the building of the Erie Canal which constituted a revolution in its own right. This paper explains that the primary difference between the early Russian films of the first half of the 20th century and the German Expressionist movement, whose films exemplify an artistic ethos, is the significance given to narrative and to expressing a singular and coherent ideology for the viewer. "The greater emphasis on narrative within early Russian cinema also is evidenced in the way that the Russian directors, most notably Eisenstein, create meaning between frames of narrative, rather than within frame in a miens-en-scene approach. In this approach, the meaning of a single scene has a meaning in and of itself and can be invested with different meanings outside of the filmed narrative sequence. For instance, ?Potemkin? makes use of what is known as a dialectic montage, or a composition of rapidly evolving scenes, too rapid for the viewer?s eye simply to apprehend just one. The composition and the apprehension of scenes all at once creates a singularity of emotion and intent regarding the action, as opposed to a sustained scene where the viewer is able to consider the image and come to his or her own conclusion regarding the events that are transpiring. This paper completes the discussion section of a dissertation on what it means to be "school ready" in the United States' educational system. Specifically, the paper states that while education has always been stressed as an important factor historically, in recent years, the actual "learning" process has emerged as a significant causal factor. The poor state of the current educational system in the United States has resulted in much criticism and reform. These criticisms and reforms have led to widespread psychological studies and research regarding best methods and learning processes. This paper gives a review of the literature in this area, indicating that the family background and social experiences of children entering early education in the current decade are very different from those entering kindergarten in prior decades. As a result, the elements of school readiness, parent training and efficacy have new definitions requiring additional research and implementation of new processes.

"The researchers found that children asked different and more interesting questions at home than they asked at school. Critics of the study stated that the data may have been biased, because the researchers chose to record home conversations starting with the lunch hour, because that was when mothers and daughters did the most talking. No effort was made to select the best time for recording school conversations. In addition, the fact that the intrusiveness of an observer is more likely to change the behavior of mothers than that of teachers, who are accustomed to classroom visitors, was also cited (Chance, 1985). Even with that limitation, the researcher's study results had a negative view of preschool and nursery school. This study compared two teaching methods: tutoring and group instruction. Formal education relies almost exclusively upon group instruction. Even in nursery school, children usually are taught as part of a group of five or more children (Chance, 1985). The mothers in this study, however, taught their daughters one-on-one. Critics of the study note that research has time and time again proved that the average tutored child learns more than almost all children receiving traditional group instruction. This theory even applies to the different categories of learning patterns reflected by young children."

The author believes that there is conclusive proof that a bias towards private transportation promotes urban sprawl. This, of course, promotes extensive deterioration of the environment and greatly increases the size of man's ecological footprint. The silver lining of this ugly cloud, though, is that efficient public transport systems can still be developed to curb this growing problem. Sprawl, ironically, may provide the necessary impetus to reduce the appeal of private transportation and eventually make public transport systems more efficient and competitive. This is but only one reason that a government's preference for private transportation over public transportation bodes ill for the environment. Abstract
This paper examines how, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a national debate regarding the immigration of several ethnic groups to the United States led to two major legal decisions, Thind v. United States (1923) which attempted to clarify the "Meaning of White," and the Immigration Act of 1924. Thind, a native inhabitant of India, was found ineligible for American citizenship because his physical appearance was "distinctively different" from what was defined as being white. The writer explains that this and many other racially-biased opinions were further propagated and supported by the Immigration Act of 1924. The paper concludes that, although the act was revised in 1952, it nonetheless strengthened purely racially-based viewpoints on people from different cultures and on immigration into the United States.

With the first question, part of the answer appears to revolve around labor and employment, for in 1908, Samuel Gompers, one of the founders and original leaders of the AFL (American Federation of Labor) points out that white Americans were losing thousands of jobs to Asians, especially the Chinese and those whom he calls "Mongolian." Gomper's main argument is that "Mongolians" have made it nearly impossible for white Americans to obtain jobs involving menial labor, such as working in a factory or some other type of industry that manufactures household goods and clothing."
