Abstract In this article, the writer examines how notions of masculinity in Canada have changed perceptibly over time. As a line of demarcation, the paper looks at how masculinity was perceived in the pre-World War II period, and the notions of masculinity that have emerged from 1946 onward - if only gradually. In so doing, the paper reviews traditional (pre-1939) notions about men being only worthy of the title of a man if they were willing combatants and providers, as well as how men today are now expected (and encouraged) to also be nurturers and care-givers. The writer presents a general idea that men are being pressured into becoming more feminine in their world-view even if Canadian society (at least in the matter of men as nurses) still harbors some sexual stereotypes that instinctively rebel at the thought of men fulfilling certain tasks.
From the Paper "Reviewing the Canada that existed before the advent of World War II, the idea that men should stand and fight - whether for principle, for honor, or for love - was not one dismissed lightly. Without question, it was expected of a man that he would not lightly take an insult or slur cast his way. For instance, tavern fights were quite common in nineteenth century Canada and the masculine code of the era dictated that a man who backed down from a challenge was, for all intents and purposes, relieving himself of some of his manhood. What would be interesting to find out - although this writer had difficulty finding appropriate scholarly sources - is whether the average term of imprisonment for assault and battery offenses was higher in the pre-World War II era than it was, and is, in the post-World War II epoch. The reason why this is a significant matter deserving of further exploration is because new information might offer fascinating insight into how the judicial elites of the age (and all of those residing within the Canada of the time who wielded socio-political power) tacitly encouraged - or at least did not actively discourage - male violence. More than that, it would be especially interesting to find out how cases of violence that involved the "upper-crust" were treated relative to instances of violence that involved only the "plebeians" of early Canadian society."

A great deal of time and effort is being spent in order to try and rectify this situation. Abstract In this article, the writer refers to papers that help to explain gender segregation in the Canadian workplace in the 20th century and subsequent developments including the Canadian Labor Movement's gradual attention to women and developments seeing women more often in unionized environments that lessened gender divisions. The writer notes that all of the articles are helpful to an understanding of topics broader than matters of labor and women for they allow glimpses of a Canadian society and culture quite transformed. The writer maintains that each paper should probably be read with consideration of all that the Canadian state did not provide to generic citizens or workers, imagining the orientations of workers, and employers, to what was acceptable or desirable, and possible, in a post-colonial economy of much alteration between the turn of the 20th century and the turn of the 21st century.

From the Paper "Women were associated with family roles, first and foremost and as was true for another generation, those able to pursue professions usually did not marry. The under-reported women doctors graduated by several Ontario universities after the 1880s, for instance, chose their vocations ahead of family life, a convention then respected. Low's clerical workers of the business sector did not expect or particularly want advancement, but learnable jobs providing income and some security so as to maintain their household roles, too."
"By the end of World War I, women attended business colleges where they learned stenography. Low's article is of a kind focused on women's labour in relation to capitalism, of course, so unless a reader is curious, there can be no wider awareness of women who were performing differently in the public sphere, not the least of which were more than 4,000 Canadian military nurses serving on the Western Front and in the Middle East through the course of World War II. Of course, Low's point is to indicate how women became expected as office workers of particular kind, low paid and without advancement. Their situations were common but by no means general from 1901 to 1931."

Abstract This paper discusses the role of Canadian unions and workers in promoting a quality-of-work agenda. It briefly argues that Canadian workers and unions should use their knowledge of the "front-line" of the workplace to act as advocates for more generous benefits packages and greater employment flexibility for men and women seeking to "marry" work life with personal life. In particular, the paper argues that comprehensive training, appropriate "time off", ample reward for those who perform admirably in their position, a strict adherence to the health concerns of employees and recognition that being a mother demands special concessions on the part of the organization are all things which unions and workers should take up with senior management during collective bargaining.
From the Paper "One other thing which unions and workers can (and, frankly, must) do is to find ways of integrating the responsibilities of life outside of work with the inevitable time spent working on behalf of the company. For example, organization-provided day-care centers (preferably located right on the work premises) have been a recognized staple of a strong corporate commitment to employee happiness and well-being for some time now (Mastroianni, 1992) and, as more and more women enter the workforce full-time, the need to meet their concerns is a practical business matter and not just a "frill" that management can lightly ignore. Given this reality, unions and employees have an obligation to present to senior officials in any corporation the burdens under which their female members labor and how easy-to-access and safe day-care centers for their children are an excellent means of keeping productive women within the organization - as opposed to having them decide that being a 'stay-at-home' mother is more satisfactory. Furthermore, the progressive organization will also offer flexible employment packages enabling women to work from home if that is something they truly desire."

Though the past record remains relatively scant in regards, anthropologists have used existing ones as a locus of study and interpretation. More numerous than surviving hunter-gatherer groups, horticultural societies also show an incredible range of gender diversity between groups, more numerous, in fact, than any other extent societal model. The quantity of studies that has come as a result of this are astounding. Those done in the area of New Guinea alone, home to at least two hundred different horticultural societies, provide ample evidence to add weight to the debate of nurture over nature, by sheer examples of the differences in living and understanding gender roles in such a relatively small and homogenous environmental area. "

Abstract This paper asserts that, although some gains have been made, women in Canada still have not achieved equality in the Canadian labour market. It is argued that this reflects a lingering, pervasive and in fact systemic inequality of the sexes within society. Furthermore, this essay advocates that policy changes should be made at federal and provincial government levels to encourage change. Specifically, the author argues that affirmative action, by way of quota policies, must be introduced and that childcare needs to be regarded by policy makers as being of paramount importance.
From the Paper "On a simplistic level, the 1999 Workplace and Employee Survey tries to explain this differential by analysing its causes. For example, it found that 20% of the differential can be attributed to the fact that women primarily work in low-wage industries. Another 10% is attributed to the fact that women had on average 14 years of full-time experience, compared with 18 years of such experience for men. The latter is a socio-economic reality related to the demands of child-bearing, which are currently inadequately addressed by government policies. It was also found that the fact that more women worked for a part-time rate accounted for some 11% of the gap, as for obscure reasons, companies with a large part-time work force usually pay lower wages. Another 7% of the gap was attributed to 3 factors: the fact that women are less likely to work in self-directed teams (which are better-paid); the fact that fewer women work for foreign-owned companies, which pay higher wages; and the fact that less women work for wages that are tied to performance (which tends to result in higher pay) (Statistics Canada)."

Abstract This paper explains how the issue of gender and gender roles have been a major theme in Western literature for some time and how it takes on a somewhat different tinge in Asian-American theater, no doubt because of the gender differences that exist in the East as opposed to the West. It shows how in Asian-American theater, gender differences are often depicted in generational terms, with a sharp contrast developed between those who have immigrated here from the East and those who were born here, or between those who can adapt and those who cannot. This paper contrasts "Tea" by Velina Hasu Houston, a drama, with "S.A.M. I Am" by Garrett Omata, a comedy, and shows how the plays treat the same issues in different ways.
From the Paper "Houston develops her story with four women, Japanese wives of American military personnel. They are living on a base near Junction City, Kansas, far from their Japanese roots. Their lives are difficult because of long periods of separation from their husbands and harsh living conditions, and in addition, they experience a degree of social alienation and homesickness as well as cultural shock. Some develop feelings of anger at their situation and resentment at having had to give up their own culture and adapt to another. Himiko is the central character and the woman who is not able to make the transition successfully, leading to the murder of her husband and her own suicide. This takes place before the play begins so that she is talked about even as her spirit appears to comment on the proceedings:.."
