Thus it is no surprise that Thomas, being a highly opinionated figure at the time, ensured that his voice was heard through his poetry. The poem challenges that we place too much emphasis on a leader and hence, this results in one person controlling a decision concerning many. In essence, "The hand that signed the paper" shows that power is such an influential device and that it can be used in many ways, for good or for bad. However, particularly to the poem, it portrays the consequences when power is used in an evil way, depicting an immense amount of pain and suffering caused by a decision of a person in a position of great power."
