Seeing Sound
A study of the transformative effect of the sound on cinema.
3,402 words (approx. 13.6 pages) | 10 sources | MLA | 2001 Australia

Paper Summary:

This paper questions how the introduction of sound into the cinema might have changed exhibition practices. It examines how production and distribution factors contributed to this and how the very nature of the cinema experience itself has been affected.

From the Paper:

"Development of sound in cinema was long-delayed due to inadequate technology. The eventual successful installation of the sound film was encouraged by the vertical integration of the industry's structure. Henceforth, the exhibition of the film transitioned from live musical accompaniment and synchronised actor dubbing to sound and image coupled on film or disc. More significant stills is that what the audience saw on the screen, was initially influenced by factors in production, such as technological limitations, and distribution. As sound was amalgamated with vision the cinema as an experience was altered tremendously."
